vitaminBK grocery shopping:
fresh markets for all my fruits and veggies. Stock up on all the good things in life! It’s not that expensive! I got all this for $45 !! (mostly all the berries drove up the cost).
for meats I find sources of grass-fed animal options, and buy them in bulk from the source. (you better have an extra freezer!) #EatRight #LiveStrong #FeelSexy
“Fuck you Bela! Just saying #EatRight isn’t magically going to make it happen!”
So I’ve peaked your interest. You’ve wanted to eat healthier for a while now, but can’t quite figure out how to make it a reality.
- “But Bela is doing it!”
- “Yeah, but he’s a food Nazi”
- “I can’t live off beans and organic fru-fru..!!”
I want to walk you through how to grocery shop. When I go grocery shopping, there are only 2 sections that I visit, the produce aisle and the butcher.
I don’t wander down aisle after aisle of processed foods. All types of factory made items, filled with preservatives, processed sugars and other nightmares I don’t care to think about it.
I go to the most colorful section I can find. Fruits and vegetables! Try and eat green vegetables at least once a day! This includes beans, Brussels sprouts, kale, broccoli etc. All of them are good for a variety of reasons.
Looking for the best all around green vegetable? Broccoli is our winner. I eat broccoli at least 3 - 4 times a week.
After you’ve selected your healthy green vegetables, now move onto things you want to eat.
- Tomatoes
- Avocados
- Red peppers
- Cilantro
- Dill
- etc./
Now it’s time to treat your self. Fruits!! When I’m craving for something sweet,.. I don’t reached for some processed candy bar, or other garbage. I reached for the sweetest tastiest things possible! Mangos! Pineapples! Berries!
Always try to have at least one kind of berry on hand (*not frozen berries!*) whatever you prefer or is in season. Berries are super double good for you, and are packed with antioxidants!
Think of fruits that aren’t too complicated, ones that you will grab and eat. Things like pineapples, and pomegranates are delicious and wonderful, but realistically you won’t peel them every time you crave something sweet. So think apples, pears, kiwis (eat them with the peel! 100% of your daily vitamin “A” ) etc./
So now your basket if full of colorful fruits and veggies, great! Time to get some protein! I would primarily go to a butcher to get meat. The prices are better; the meat is fresher, and probably less hormones. But lets say you decide to get you meat at the grocery store. Where to start?
I usually buy 10-15 boneless chicken breasts, put 2 – 3 in every zip-lock bag, and freeze them. As I use one up, I take another out to thaw. Try to have some nice red meat once a week as well. A nice piece of steak should be a week could be a weekend treat!
Now I mentioned that I only visit two sections of the grocery store. That is because I don’t eat dairy and I get my eggs from an organic farmer. If that’s not a reality for you, than it’s time visit egg sections! Try and pick organic/free-range eggs.
-“Why Bela, these x-large eggs are2 dollars cheaper!”
I go through 2-dozen eggs a week. High in cholesterol, maybe; but they are filled with growth hormones! Imagined the growth potential of eating 24 baby fetuses a week! (super gross, I know,..) but the fact remains that you want a clean source of eggs. So invest a little into yourself. You’re worth it!
Other things to consider:
Always have the following at home:
- Garlic
- Ginger
- Good olive oil
- Coconut oil
- Fresh herbs and spices (food doesn’t have to be boring!)
- Quality Dijon mustard
- Pizza pockets (just checking if you’re still paying attention ;)
Cooking is a fun and beautiful past time. You have to eat everyday, several times a day; so take the time to learn how to treat your body properly.
Explore the endless delicious possibilities your grocery store has to offer!
